assessing different soil water contents on corn root development

چکیده
abstract plant roots absorb water and minerals from soil solution. plant production is a function of root distribution and its activity in soil. by increasing root density in soil unit volume, roots absorb more water and minerals. this implies that knowledge of root development is an important factor for crop production. to determine the most suitable amount of water for the maximum development of corn (zea mays l.) root, a greenhouse experiment was conducted in 2006-07. water was applied in 55, 70, 85, 100 and 110 percent of water demand. the total corn roots were taken from the all pots in three stages: i.e. 8-9 leaves, the silk production and the dough. wet and dry weights, volume, surface area and length of roots were measured in all three stages. in addition, ratio of root by dry matter of stem was calculated. the results revealed that weight, volume, surface area and length of roots were increased by increasing in the amount of water applied up to 100% water demand. a significant difference (5%) was found between treatments 85, 100, and 110% water demand with treatment 55% water demand, by an increase in the amount of water applied, the ratio of root to stem was decreased. it means, when water use is in optimum level, the root growth is stimulated, otherwise it is limited. it is concluded that optimum efficiency of water is taken with using 70 percent of water demand instead of 100 or 110 percent.

Assessing Photosynthetic Leaf Area of Corn under Different Tillage Systems and Soil Zones
The photosynthetic leaf area may be influenced by soil texture. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate photosynthetic leaf area under different soil textures, based on soil electric conductivity (EC) measurements, tillage systems, and N rates in dryland corn (Zea mays L.) from 2007 to 2009. A commercially available soil electric conductivity (EC) measurement system (Veris Technologies...
متن کاملConservation Tillage and Irrigation Effects on Corn Root Development
The effects of conservation-tillage practices on the root environment of corn (Zea mays L.) may differ with varying amounts of irrigation. Dryland, 50% irrigation, and 100% irrigation treatments were applied in combination with disc, no-tillage, and a postemergence chisel treatment designed to allow rapid infiltration of irrigation water. The study was conducted during the 1980 growing season a...
متن کاملOptimal fertilizer application for Panax notoginseng and effect of soil water on root rot disease and saponin contents
BACKGROUND Blind and excessive application of fertilizers was found during the cultivation of Panax notoginseng in fields, as well as increase in root rot disease incidence. METHODS Both "3414" application and orthogonal test designs were performed at Shilin county, Yunnan province, China, for NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) and mineral fertilizers, respectively. The data were used ...
متن کاملPartitioning soil-water losses in different plant populations of dry-land corn
In situ volumetric soil-water contents were measured on 11 days at 0.20 m depth intervals to 1.0 m in a field experiment with four replicates of a dry-land corn hybrid (Pioneer 3140) at plant populations of 37, 49, and 62 thousand plants haÿ1. These measurements were used to estimate total soil-water losses in each of the 12 field plots for each of the 10 measurement intervals. The area of the ...
متن کاملEffects of Skidder Passes and Slope on Soil Disturbance in Two Soil Water Contents
Skidding operations induce changes in soil physical properties, which have the potential to impact soil sustainability and forest productivity. Our objective was to investigate the effects of traffic frequency, trail slope, and soil moisture content on soil compaction, total porosity and rut depth. Treatments included a combination of three different traffic intensities (3, 7, and 14 passes), t...
